The Indians have not talked to the agent for free-agent infielder Nick Punto since both parties were at the Winter Meetings, but a person with knowledge of the situation said the sides had “meaningful discussions” while in Florida.
At the Meetings, Indians general manager Chris Antonetti would only confirm that he met with the representatives for multiple free agents. Punto is known to be among that group.
It is not known if the Tribe discussed money or contract terms with Punto’s representative, Jeff Caufield, but the two sides are expected to continue dialogue in the near future. Punto could be in the mix for Cleveland’s opening at third base, as well as serving as insurance for multiple infield spots.
Punto has plenty of experience at third base, shortstop and second base, and the Indians have some level of need at each position. The Tribe is in the market for a short-term solution for third (buying more development time for prospect Lonnie Chisenhall), needs more certainty in the backup role at short and currently is without a clear front-runner for second base.
